Short Review: You know how sometimes you sit down with a new book and it ends up being EXACTLY what you were looking for! That’s what the 5th Wave was for me, it had the right amount of suspense, survival, and Others. I devoured this book in a matter of days and it would have been sooner, but work got in the way.
This book follows Cassie Sullivan as she tries to find her brother, Sam, who was taken by the government. The book jumps back and forth in time so you understand what happened to Cassie’s family during each wave of the alien encounter. While Cassie is the main protagonist, other characters share their perspectives in their own dedicated chapters.
Along the way she meets Evan Walker who is naturally a good looking guy who wants nothing more than to protect Cassie. Of course he also has some mysterious background that he doesn’t want to divulge to our protagonist. While this is a pretty run of the mill trope, I still enjoyed their chemistry.
The twist was slightly predictable and there are some slower parts, but it was still a great story about survival. Survival tales always have me wondering what I would do in the characters situation. I’m not sure I could have dealt with everything Cassie went through.
If you like apocalyptic survival tales with a smattering of aliens, then read this book. If you have any suggestions for books within that genre, let me know in the comments below. It might just be my new genre obsession.
Questions for Discussion:
- What would you have done in Cassie’s place to survive?
- Which wave do you find the most disturbing?
- Would you trust Evan?
- Did you see the ending coming?
