Recommend for: People who enjoy a classically relevant book that will haunt you during each President’s term

Short Review: I knew this book was a classic, science fiction, and depressing. That’s really all I knew going into it. After having finished the book it really blew my mind. I can see why it’s a classic and has sometimes been required reading for high school.

This book is going to stay with me the rest of my life. It was terrifying and felt like reality could one day be similar to this story. Some aspects might already be true like, controlling the news and changing history. It’s scary to think how much is going on in our government, or even in the world, that we aren’t aware of. Same goes for what we are taught during history classes. We only know what is published in the news and textbooks.

As an American, I was reading this from a U.S. perspective, but this could happen all over the world. I was recently in Havana, Cuba and saw a lot of “2+2=5” graffiti throughout the city. Governments, like the ones in 1984, effect not only that country’s citizens, but ALL of us.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. How did you feel about the ending of this novel?
  2. Why do you think this book has stood the test of time?
  3. Do you ever see elements of this book becoming a reality?

My Rating Scale:

5 stars – Can’t stop, won’t stop thinking about this book

4 stars – Deeply enjoyed

3 stars – Meh, it was fine

2 stars – Didn’t give me anything to relate to or a world I wanted to be a part of

1 star – This is just the worst and NOT for me
